In 1994, the Richland school board considered incorporating Intelligent Design into the public schools' science classes.
After much debate, the Richland school board ultimately rejected a proposal by school board President Teri Sharp to incorporate Intelligent Design into the public school science curriculum. Sharp based her suggestion on a district policy that requires the district to present a balanced view on controversial topics.
The district curriculum committee received about 100 letters on the topic, including one signed by 18 local clergy members. The clergy letter requested that if creationism is taught in public schools, it should include accounts from the Christian Bible, ancient Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome, Hinduism, Islam, and African-American and Indian cultures. The ACLU also voiced its disapproval to the Intelligent Design proposal.
